Tilting of roll and pitch axes can be useful to monitor for boats/ships, aircraft, construction vehicles, and myriad other attitude sensitive vehicles.

Valuable yachts can sink when hulls crack due to crushing ice when moored during freezing conditions. External and internal ice pressure can create cracks and subsequent water intrusion, causing the unmanned boat to pitch upward or roll sidewise prior to sinking. A Tilt-Boss sensor onboard with a radio link can alert owner of impending loss. Combined with water detectors and temperature sensors, information on the security of a moored boat can be transmitted while there is time to prevent a very costly catastrophe.

Front-end loaders used in forest-fire fighting can avoid rollover and end-over accidents in mountainous terrain by installing a Tilt-Boss system on the machine to monitor and alarm when tilt becomes dangerous. Ground terrain can be hard to read in poor light and smoky conditions, while the Tilt-Boss provides a gravity reference to maintain safe operation.

The Tilt-Boss is installed face side up, oriented to align with the boat of machine roll and pitch axes. Powered by 10-30VDC, it draws only about 30ma quiescent, and 70ma with both axes at full scale. Two 4-20ma outputs provide precise analog signals that can be monitored by a nearby PC or PLC monitoring system.

Rel-Tek can supply the Tilt-Boss sensor for integration into existing monitoring equipment, or supply complete systems using our compact embedded PC monitoring systems with power, alarms, and so on.

For boats and ships, water detectors and temperature sensors are companion instruments to the Tilt-Boss. A display in the cabin keeps the boat operator of roll/pitch attitudes while in motion. But adding an auto-dialer and/or radio link provides shore-bound owners aware of impending sinking issues while their yacht is moored at the dock.

The digital display on the sensor lid shows the two-axis tilt status in real time, with a two-readout delay. The Pitch 4-20ma output signal indicate zero pitch at 12ma, with +25 deg Pitching up reading up to 20ma, and -25 deg pitch down reading down to 4ma. Similarly for Roll axis, CW 25 deg reads up to 20ma, and the zero Roll CCW -25 deg reads 4ma.

Install the Tilt-Boss rigidly using four screws or bolts, keeping the face of the sensor looking upward and aligning the pitch and roll axes appropriately. A custom bracket may be needed for wall-mounting. Grounding is not necessary.

Applications for the Tilt-Boss are abundant. Yachts and construction machinery are obvious. However, any trucks, trailers, and lifting equipment using outboard stabilizers to avoid tip-over can benefit for faster setup. Also for campers, tanker trucks, fire engines, and such that need leveling to operate properly.
